Prairie Star Ranch offers a full care facility with daily turnout (weather permitting) Some stalls also have a private turnout attached to allow the horse in and out all day as well. Horses are fed three times per day. There are two feedings of three flakes of hay and grain and one just hay. Feeding times are 5:30am, 10am and 5pm. We make all our own hay, it is a grass/ timothy/ bird's foot blend. Beat pulp is offered free of charge to any horse in need as well. Daily pasture turnout is provided (weather permitting) there are two groups that rotate in the pasture, one in the morning, one in the afternoon. These groups are based primarily on the horses behavior and preference.

There are many places to ride. There is a 50X80 indoor arena and two out door arenas. The outdoor arenas measure 70X100 and 110X200. There is also a lovely track around the pond and a round pen for any one who needs to use it. There are numerous trails to explore. Riding lessons DO NOT limit boarder riding time. Any boarder wishing to ride in the same space a lesson is being conducted in is more than welcome with the instructors permission. The barn is never closed to boarders, come and enjoy your horse any time you want!

Horses are inspected several times daily to make sure they are healthy and comfortable. Boarders are kept abreast of any major changes in their horse or causes for concern. If desired, additional daily care such as medical maintenance  can be given to any needy horses for a minimal fee. There is NO additional charge for the application of feed supplements or oral medications if supplied by the boarder.

The board is $330 per month in the large barn and $280 per month in the small barn. This includes sales tax.  The only difference between the two barns is that the large barn has the arena attached to it, the small barn does not. The small barn requires about a 30 yard walk to reach the large barn where the arena is. Quality of care in both barns is exceptional, there is no difference there.  We also offer overnight stabling and layovers to and from Canada.

Prairie Star Ranch Horsemanship Program

“Notice the slightest change, reward the slightest try.”

This wise advice comes from Horseman Tom Dorrance. This is the very fabric of the horsemanship program here at Prairie Star. When Mr. Dorrance first spoke those words he was referring to horses and the ways in which we exist with them. The ways we train them, handle them, ride them. Every moment we spend in the presence of a horse holds great power and effect.  Our relationships with our horses are affected by our every action. We can become stronger riders beginning with our actions on the ground. The horse communicates to us using body language and expression. He learns through repetition and the offering of comfort and release. We cannot force a horse to do our bidding (they weigh over a thousand pounds and our chances of  “forcing” them to do anything are slim). They must be offered situations that allow them the opportunity to make the right choice.

A horse that is exposed to these positive methods will learn remarkably fast and be exceptionally willing. They have become a trusted friend to you, as you have to them. This is the first lesson we encourage our students to endeavor to understand. There is more to consider when enjoying the company horses than the time we spend on their backs. It is my hope that our students’ eyes are opened to a vast and wonderful world of understanding the horse at all levels and disciplines.

The horses are our greatest teachers. They help us learn patience, responsibility and “feel”. It is my goal that a student working in our program will become a well-rounded, capable and open-minded horse person. Riding horses should be an enjoyable experience for all who endeavor to pursue it. We work very hard to ensure that every rider in our program feels safe, happy and enjoys the adventure of learning to ride and handle horses.  We introduce all students to riding in an English saddle first to ensure the development of their balance and a strong "center". After each student feels confident at the walk and the trot they are then exposed to a western saddle. The students here are given the choice of what discipline they prefer and are encouraged in whichever direction they most enjoy. Horses are such a joy, there is something for everyone to enjoy, we explore possibilities with each student until they find their passion. We all love to learn about something we love!

Prairie Star Ranch offers basic  riding/horsemanship lessons taught by Anna Farney. We offer semi-private (no more than 2-3) for $20.00 per session and private lessons at $30.00 per session.  These lessons are available every day of the week.

Our aim is to promote safety with horses and to educate students about the mind, body and soul of the horse.
